Term Definition
Cache

See disk cache.

Cartridge Font

A font contained in a cartridge that physically plugs into your printer, often used by laser printers. See also soft font.

Cascade

A way of arranging open windows on the desktop so that they overlap each other, with the title bar of each window remaining visible.

Cascading Menu

A menu that opens from a command on another menu. A command that opens a Cascading Menu has a right arrow next to it.

CAT5

Short for category 5. A type of network cabling that has more resilience than thin Ethernet. CAT5 cabling typically runs at 10bps or 100bps and is used in conjunction with hubs and switches.

Centronics Interface

See parallel interface.

Character

A single letter, number, punctuation mark or symbol.

Character Set

A group of letters, numbers and symbols that have a common relationship (e.g. a particular font or ASCII coding).

Check Box

A small, square box that appears in a dialog box that can be selected or de-selected. When the Check Box is selected (called 'checking'), an 'X' appears in the box. A Check Box represents an option that you can turn on or off.

Click

To press and release a mouse button (usually the left) quickly. See also 'double click'.

Clipboard

A temporary storage location used to transfer data between documents and between applications. Typically, you use an application's 'cut' and 'copy' commands to send data to the Clipboard and the 'paste' command to insert that data elsewhere. You can view the contents of the Clipboard using the 'Clipboard/Book Viewer'.

Closed Source Software – Otherwise known

The terms “Closed Source” and "Proprietary Software" are often used to mean computer software which is neither Free nor Open Source. It is terminology for forms of software licensing that is not fully standardized and can be controversial. A literal meaning of "Closed or Proprietary" in relation to software, is that it has a copyright owner who can exercise control over what users can do with their software. This type of software is distributed in a compiled ‘runtime’ form and does not include the source code, making changes impossible. In addition, use of the software carries licensing to the number of users and the content to which they are entitled to use.

COM Port

Comunication Port. See 'serial port'.

Command

A word or phrase that you choose in order to carry out an action. You choose a Command from a menu or type a Command at the DOS prompt.
