Term Definition
Address1

An E-mail address uniquely identifies someone's mail account and the domain name of mail server it resides on. Follows the format of username@domainname.

Address2

The address of a site on the Internet. Also known as the URL. Follows the format of http://www.internetsite.domain

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lin

A form of data communication over standard copper telephone wires between a local telephone subscriber and the telephone exchange, whereby the capacity of the line is increased in bandwidth to enable the carriage of both voice and data simultaneously. The asymmetry of the circuit provides greater down load capacity than up load.

Application

A computer program used for a particular kind of work, such as word processing or database management. Also known as 'program'.

Arrow Keys

On your computer keyboard, the keys you use to navigate around your screen. Each key is marked with an arrow and is named for the direction in which the arrow points (up, down, left and right). Also known as direction keys.

ASCII

The American standard ode for information interchange. A way of giving character sets (letters, numbers, symbols, etc.) a numeric code (e.g. The ASCII Character 'A' has a code of 65).

Attachment

The name given to a file (document, spreadsheet, sound, picture, etc) which is sent alongside an E-mail.

AUTOEXEC.BAT

A batch program (set of commands) that is automatically carried out by the DOS operating system whenever the computer is started or restarted. The file contains basic start-up commands that help configure the system. AUTOEXEC.BAT is performed after the CONFIG.SYS file.
